While staying in Algoma, Wisconsin and night fishing walleye on Green Bay, I spent a fair amount of time at the Algoma Hardware Store & Sporting Goods.
Kathy, the gal, who owns it is pretty intelligent when it comes to any type of fishing.
We got to talking about Walleye Nation Creations crankbaits and she said, "yeah they work but so does everything else". I said, "okay so what are you saying?" She said, "the biggest mistake people make is pulling every crankbait at the same speed. Most people pull crankbaits at 2 miles an hour give or take a little. The problem with that is each crankbait has a different action and to get the desired action from a certain crankbait it takes a certain speed. Take for instance Berkley's Flicker Shad. It might entice a fish to bite at 1.5 mph, the Salmo Hornet at 1.8 and the Walleye Nation Creations Reaper at 2.5. Pulling every crankbait at the same speed is just pulling a crankbait. You're not getting the desired action from the specific crankbait that you're looking for. And that's part of the reason people don't catch fish all the time, every time".
Yes there are other factors but speed is one of the most important. She said, "you need to drop that crankbait into the water and watch it. Is it giving you the action you are looking for? If not ,speed up or slow down to get the action you need". She said, "I love the science of it" and I agreed. I love the science of it as well but I didn't think about that specific science.
There's more to speed than speed.
