I happened to watch an episode of Castle last night. Oh come on who's not a fan of Richard Castle and Nikki Heat, okay, Beckett!
It just so happens that episode was called that '70s show and I got to thinking about fishing when I was a kid in the seventies! What a bunch of awesome memories.
It was nothing like today. You wouldn't expect that though would you? Ha.
I was pretty lucky as a youngster getting to fish Devil's Lake, Lake Sakakawea and Van Hook Arm, and Lake Metigoshe in North Dakota and a bunch of cool lakes in Minnesota like Crystal, Lida, Franklin and Lizzie on a regular basis with my grandparents.
Grandma was a fisherman or fisherperson or whatever we have to call them these days. She had no problem being called a fisherman, matter of fact he was quite proud of that!
But that was in the 70's. My favorite real was a Zebco 33 and for some odd reason I had a loyalty to the 33 and only the 33. I didn't really care what I had for a rod. As a matter of fact I think I was still using one of the old metal rods with a cork handle.
Grandpa finally broke down and bought the Lowrance FISH-LO-KA-TOR or the little green box and that was pretty cool. We still used buoys but we made the switch from Hi-Lex bottles to the fancy buoy with the string and lead. Gave it a toss and you knew exactly where your fishing spot was. No GPS. No, there was no such thing as a bottom bouncer but we pulled a bunch of Little Joes and Lazy Ikes!
My fondest memory was Frazier's Resort on Crystal in Minnesota. They had a few Lung fishing boats but they still had the old green and white wooden boats…aw the memories!
